With Organic September in full swing, we share five tips from the Soil Association on how to add a bit more organic into your life
Look at what you already buy
Making the switch to organic might feel daunting but you’d be surprised how many items that are already in your fridge or on your bathroom shelf that are organic. The likes of Clipper Tea , Yeo Valley milk and Neal’s Yard Remedies skincare are all organic. Look for the logo to make sure that what you’re buying is a genuine organic product.
Buy multipurpose
Be savvy with your purchases and choose products that are multipurpose; coconut oil is not only for cooking, you can use it to remove makeup and moisturise your skin. Coffee grounds are also a great way to exfoliate. Re-use mason jars and take-away containers for storing leftovers.
Less but better
Creativity is key, instead of ditching your leftovers or discarding meat off-cuts, scour your recipe books to create meals that use up your leftovers, or make the most of an unusual off cut – salvaging food waste.
Pare down your beauty routine; editing the number of products you use at each stage of your regime can cut down on time and pennies. Build your organic beauty collection by replacing non-organic items when they run out.
Shop around
Organic food is easier to find than you may think. It is available in over 8,000 places in the UK, from supermarkets to independent shops, box schemes, cafes and restaurants – and it doesn’t always have to cost more. Everyday items such as yoghurt, bread, pasta, tea and seasonal vegetables are often the same price as non-organic.
When it comes to your wash bag, organic beauty products are a little different. The price varies based on the type of ingredients used to formulate the product. Let’s face it, synthetic ingredients are mass produced, cheap and easy to obtain, and organic ingredients aren’t. However, affordable organic beauty does exist and lots of brands now offer sample kits and testers, allowing you to try before you buy.

Back to basics
Stick to the staples; start by switching your milk and tea to organic alternatives, just a small change can make a huge difference.
Be realistic – organic makeup is difficult to find, so instead, focus on using organic skincare. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so it makes sense to give it some TLC.
The choices you make with the food you eat, clothes you wear and cosmetic products you use, all have an impact on the world you live in. Going organic is easier than you think. Switching to one organic item can help contribute to a more sustainable system – for the better. When you buy certified organic products, you can be sure that:
It contains no GM Ingredients
The organic ingredients are sourced sustainably
The manufacturing processes is transparent
You’re helping protect wildlife and biodiversity
There won’t be any synthetic colours, dyes or fragrances or artificial colours and preservatives
