The UK’s top Tao guru on the importance of feeling fruity
I’ve been asked by readers to talk about feeling more comfortable with your sexuality . There’s no doubt about it, sexual energy is the most powerful human force there is. Imagine removing sexual energy from the human equation: procreation would cease and in the (lack of a) twinkling of the eye, there’d be no more human race.
This is partly why organised religions over the millennia have all been so focused on controlling it, calling its expression a sin and getting their knickers in a right old twist about it at every turn. If you can control sexuality, you can control the people. It’s no accident that the Church’s control over society has diminished proportionately with the general increase of sexual freedom.
But the fact remains we’re hung up about it as a culture. Our knickers are in a collective twist about our sexuality. Sure we make free to run it up the pole, so to speak, parody it and capitalise on it through the overt sexualisation employed in marketing any product from music to apartments but, even after all these decades of social and sexual liberation, we’re still about as liberated about it all as a hamster in a cage.
We still think of sex as naughty, dirty and dangerous. And, at its best, it is. But it’s also a beautiful expression of love – for another, or for yourself, and for the mystery of life itself. Indeed being lost in the throes of sexual ecstasy is the closest many of us ever get to making authentic, tangible contact with the higher realms of consciousness. For that brief, or if you’re lucky, not so brief, interlude in time, you’re utterly transported as if on a magic carpet ride, whisked up and away from all mundane drudgery, from the prosaic into the lyrical, from the earthbound to the transcendent realm. And all you have to do to make it happen is enjoy yourself and hopefully enabling the other/s to enjoy themselves equally.
However it’s not all just about the sexual act. Sexual energy also finds its healthy expression through creative enterprises, through athletic prowess and through drive on the material plane in general. We need that energy informing the sexual drive to fuel our fascination for life. It’s through this fascination we’re inclined to take the risks we need and make the investments required to transform life into the grandest adventure it can be, as opposed to remaining trapped in its cul-de-sac.
So whether it’s more fruitiness you want specifically, or more underlying drive to succeed in general, the following routine to stimulate the flow of sexual energy and increase your capacity to feel comfortable with it, will be of benefit.
1. Alter your breathing
Place your hands on your lower abdomen. Visualise a large sponge in your belly. Exhale and as you do, contract the stomach muscles – pull the stomach in towards the spine, as if squeezing all the air out of the sponge.
Now inhale, relax and allow the sponge to inflate again to accommodate the inrushing air, as if drawing it deep into the belly. Keep doing this and you’ll note your chest remains relatively still, but when you inhale and your belly swells to allow it, you can actually feel your pubic bone moving. Keep breathing and see how much you can move your pubic bone to and fro with the motion.
2. Draw vitality directly into your genitals
The ancient Taoists developed many ingenious methods for stimulating sexual thrust, based on combining breath with mental focus, imagining being able to breathe directly in and out of various spots in the body. And though imaginary, by doing it you do actually feel a sensation of energy passing through the point.
Imagine you’re breathing directly in and out through the vaginal opening, or the tip of the penis, gender depending. Allow each inhalation to fill the entire genital region before exhaling again. Repeat up to 18 breath cycles like this then rest, taking time to appreciate and enjoy the charge built up between your legs.
3. Amplify the sexual energy and conduct it to all parts
Once you’ve developed a bit of a charge, you can go on to amplify it and spread it to inform all parts of you, body, mind and spirit, thus increasing your overall life-drive, enthusiasm, vitality, creative thought and optimism. Imagine you’re breathing indirectly through the ball of each foot, drawing the breath up the inside of both legs and into the genitals.
Then as you exhale, feel the breath move out, across the hips, down the outside of both legs and out through the balls of the feet again. Repeat up to 18 breath cycles, then rest as before, enjoying the sensation of energy coursing through your lower parts.
4. Linking the idea
Now you’ve developed a positive surge of vitality in the lower parts, it’s time to link an idea to it. So now repeat the previous exercise and as you inhale up the insides of the legs, tell yourself: “I am sexy, I am damn sexy, in fact I’m damn, damn sexy.” Method-act it – say it to yourself like you mean it and in time you will. Then, as you exhale down the outsides of your legs, tell yourself: “I’m magnetic, I’m incredibly magnetic.” Again say it like you mean it and in time you will. As soon as you do mean it, if even just fleetingly, you transmit the message directly to your subconscious, which in turn changes you at the autonomic level, causing you to actually feel and be more sexy and magnetic.
5. Drawing the charge upwards for general usefulness
Now rather than leave yourself all charged up and nowhere to go, draw the charge upwards through the body and it will serve as a drive for your creative powers, leaving you revitalised and raring to go. Do this by breathing in as if directly through the genitals all the way along the frontal aspect of your spine to your navel. As you exhale again visualise the breath compressing itselfbehind the navel to form a small ball of condensed, concentrated vitality. You’ll find yourself up for whatever treats life puts in your path.
