Dr Nick Lowe, Professor of Dermatology, explains why mineral make-up could be great for your skin and how to use it
Mineral make-up has many advantages. There are lots of different powders, offering a wide variety of colours and densities to suit different skin types. Mineral tends to be lighter than conventional make-up, meaning it’s less likely to aggravate acne. I often recommend people with sensitive skin leave it on overnight – it’ll come off in the shower the next morning and they can just re-apply. Often very sensitive skin can be aggravated by aggressive removing of foundation, so it’s beneficial that you don’t need to take off mineral make-up.
1 Ensure your skin is well moisturised before you start, and that the moisturiser has been fully absorbed. For a natural glow, start with a loose foundation in a shade that slightly warms your complexion. Tap a small amount of the powder into the lid, and swirl in a mineral foundation brush to load its bristles. Tap excess powder off by knocking the brush on the side of the lid, then apply, lightly at first, building up to your desired coverage using gentle downward strokes. To conceal any blemishes, dip your finger in the powder and press into the spot, then whisk away any excess powder with the mineral make-up brush.
2 Lightly load a blusher brush with blusher in a shade that mimics your natural flush, tapping away excess powder as before. Ideally, choose blusher with a gentle iridescence to enhance the youthful glow. Starting at the apples of your cheeks, sweep upwards towards your temples. Remember, less is always more!
3 Curl your lashes using an eyelash curler, then apply a natural mineral mascara, agitating the brush to ensure lashes are coated. Unless your complexion is very dark, brown will enhance your eyes without looking unnatural.
4 Dip an eyeshadow brush in a warm-toned mineral eyeshadow, tap away excess product and sweep over lids. Peach or gold almost-nude shades are flattering to most skin tones.
5 Slick on a little lip gloss, pressing your lips together to distribute the colour. Et voila! Years younger in moments.
