Feed your skin with these natural DIY recipes
Everyone has their one beauty hang-up. From skin that’s prone to breakouts to dullness around the eyes, we’ve all been dealt a bad hand by Mother Nature at some point. We just thank our lucky stars there are nourishing face masks around which aid our ailments and bring us back to feeling fabulous. And the best part… if you don’t have time to pop to the shops, many miracle concoctions can be whipped up using ingredients you’re bound to already have in the home. Beauty chef Shelley Cho has shared three of her favourite natural face mask recipes, so what are you waiting for? Raid the kitchen cupboards and treat yourself.
Mediterranean anti-dryness mask
You’ll need:
Half a very ripe avocado, mashed
1 level tbsp olive oil
1 level tsp Manuka honey
Mix all of the ingredients together until smooth. Apply to freshly cleansed skin and leave for five to 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
Shelley says: “The vitamin E and essential fatty acids in avocados and olive oil are very hydrating for dry or mature skin. Manuka honey is well known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is also a natural humectant, meaning that it draws moisture into the skin.”
Break-out busting tea tree mask
You’ll need:
1/4 papaya, mashed
3 drops tea tree essential oil
2 level tsp jojoba oil
Mix all of the ingredients together until smooth. Apply to freshly cleansed skin and leave for five to 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
Shelley says: “The enzymes in papaya act as a chemical exfoliator for the skin. It gently dissolves away the surface layer leaving the face looking refreshed and bright. Tea tree oil has long been used as a treatment for blemishes and acne as it dries out spots quickly. It should always be diluted in a carrier oil and jojoba oil makes a great choice especially for acne-prone skin as it is very similar in texture to the sebum that we naturally produce.”
Simple Skin brightening mask
You’ll need:
1 level tbsp fine yellow clay
2 level tbsp lemon juice
2 level tbsp water
Mix all of the ingredients together until smooth. Apply to freshly cleansed skin and leave for five to 10 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
Shelley says: “Lemon juice also acts as a gentle chemical exfoliator and works to instantly brighten skin. Yellow clay is full of minerals that will also brighten, as well as tighten, the skin.”
