The UK’s top tao master on the importance of community to create a better world
I’ve just been in Houston, Texas, doing a run of talks and workshops on consciousness, where a large sector of the population is into personal development, and was struck by something I’ve not seen for a long while.
Though a heavily science-based community, what with NASA and the biggest medical centre in the world, many leading scientific lights of which attended my events, the overriding quality there is heart.
People in Houston are kind, considerate, empathetic and community spirited. It certainly works for them. Houston is one of the world’s wealthiest cities, the lifestyle, though sensible in terms of work-leisure, is a happy one – people work hard and enjoy each others’ company. And they’re disciplined about it, as they are about personal practice. People meditate, do their tai chi, yoga or whatever they’re into, religiously. And it shows.
But they’re not doing it in the usual self-obsessed way. They’re doing it with an intention to help create a better world for everybody.
And it’s true, by dedicating the fruits of your practice to the collective good, you place yourself in the most benign aspect of the Great Flow, and find your own life working more smoothly and successfully as a result.
Now while it’s true the US economy is starting to bounce back, which bodes well for the whole world, we’re still not out of this global chicane on that score, nor on many other potentially greater challenges, such as climate change.
For us to emerge from this into a new golden era for humanity, we need to come together now and pool our huge collective intelligence.
It begins with each of us and requires nothing more initially than being willing to dedicate every thought, word and deed to the highest good – to let everything about the way you live your life be a blessing for everyone around us.
TRY THIS…
Here are three simple ways to tap into your universal community
There’s a pair of acupressure points connected to the heart energy, font of all goodness within, which if pressed thrice daily gradually induce a greater flow of compassion and caring. Press with your right thumb into the dead centre of your left palm for 10 seconds, firmly enough to produce a strong, pleasant ache, and repeat on the right palm.
Remind yourself frequently: in the womb there was suddenly consciousness, there was suddenly life, there was suddenly love – you love having consciousness and life. And it’s the same for all of us. Whatever we call it, God, Tao, Spirit, we can’t refute it exists, this primordial consciousness-life-love combo, nor that all of us are expressions of it. Train yourself to see the entire continuum of worldly life as one presence and to love it – in everyone and everything you transact with, even just in your thoughts.
Start each day with one question in your heart – not, ‘how can I make this the best for me?’, but, ‘how do I make this the best for all of us?’
