Meditation teacher, NLP coach and former Strictly Come Dancing star Camilla Dallerup reveals how improving your breathing can elevate your energy levels and mood
Back when I was dancing competitively, a coach once reminded me to breathe deep into my belly rather than high in my chest. Over the years as a life coach and meditation teacher, I’ve learned exactly what he meant. Just the other day, I took a breath class to check in on how I was breathing nowadays. I felt so energised and inspired afterwards that I want to encourage others to give it a try, too. It’s something you can do while working out, sitting at your desk or working to walk.
I always pay attention to my breathing when I’m running, but at the gym this morning I focused on it 100 percent. I felt so full of energy, much more so than after my usual workout. My whole body felt alert and connected. It left me wanting to keep checking in with my breath throughout the day. Next time you’re sat in front of a computer, try breathing deep into your belly for a few minutes – you’ll realise that you’ve been breathing high in your chest!
Camilla’s 5-minute breathing exercise
If you want to strengthen your core, sleep better or simply de-stress everyday, I urge you to put on your favourite tune, lie down flat on the floor and just breathe. Breathe away all the stress and tiredness. Oxygen is the most important nutrient for our bodies and minds and getting the right amount can seriously effect our moods.
1 Lie down flat on the floor with your legs stretched out.
2 Put one hand on your belly and one on your chest.
3 Inhale deeply and notice your stomach expanding and rising.
4 Exhale as your stomach deflates letting it fall towards your spine. Continue to do this for about five minutes and then check in with yourself throughout the day to make sure you haven’t reverted to shallow breathing in the chest. You will be surprised by just how much improving your breathing can elevate your energy levels and mood.
