Baby Pacifier
The playground can be a mini battleground – what with the politics and bullying – so to tackle this, schools in Cardiff are bringing babies into the classroom. The idea is that observing parent and child bonds will help curb aggression by teaching the children to nurture and empathise. The scheme called Roots to Empathy has already been a success in Canada and Scotland.

Amazing Grace
Holistic supermum Janey Lee Grace sees the light this month
‘Is the red circle brighter of the green?’ the optician asked my son in his routine eye test. Through my plus five contact lenses I squinted, worried that he’d inherited my genes rather than his father’s rather smug perfect vision.
I’ve recently been researching Dr William Bates who wrote Better Sight Without Glasses in the 1920s. His theory is that as the eyes have muscles, just like every other muscle, they need to be exercised. He developed a series of exercises such as moving your eyes up, down, straight ahead and diagonally. He also created another called ‘palming’ – placing your palms over your eyes for a few seconds then looking directly at bright light.
A new book, Improve Your Eyesight Naturally by Leo Angart (£16, CrownHouse Publishing) carries on Bate’s important work. Leo believes it’s a myth that poor vision is inherited or that it inevitably deteriorates with age. He runs vision training courses where one learns relaxation, energy work and eye exercises, I’ve signed up – perhaps even I can reduce my prescription! Meanwhile I’ve been advised to leave my contact lenses off, (it’s like wearing a tight corset) and practice relaxation techniques and go for a walk, imagining a paintbrush on my nose to trace the outline of trees, the kids are having fun with it. Oh, and I’m lining them up every day…. come on now, eyes up, eyes down….
