Our fitness guru Anthony Mayatt looks at how to take the first steps towards a better body
Starting is always the hardest part.
Are you someone who has finally decided to get off the sofa and do something to improve your health? Are you someone who has done the endless diet after diet and always ends up back to square one? Have you tried every exercise regime from every fitness magazine and not seen results after a couple of weeks? I am sure that most people reading this would have said yes to at least one of these. If not, you are in the minority.
The title of this feature says it all, the start of a new health goal is always the hardest. And, because of how hard it is, so many people give up because a) they do not see immediate results b) the changes that are needed to be made were so different to their normal lifestyle they gave up or c) they were not given professional advice on how to go about setting goals and starting their health kick. Starting really is the hardest part so to make that process easier, plan everything from your workouts to what you buy at the supermarket each week. In general, you may be completely changing your current lifestyle but everything takes time to settle and as long as you are patient and persistent things will change and you will feel and look a million times better.
Safety first
Seek advice from a health professional on the best way to go about working towards your goals. Maybe you are clued up on the exercise side but have no idea on the optimum nutrition, or vice versa. If there is something you are unsure of, simply speak to someone with the right knowledge. Otherwise, you may find you increase your stress, worrying about whether what you are doing is correct and, most likely, giving up as a result.
Good health is a long-term target, so don’t expect to have that six pack or the perfect healthy eating lifestyle within a week or two. Things take time, but once you’re committed it does become easier. The longer you carry on, the more educated you will get and you’ll also notice you make healthy lifestyle choices without even thinking. Start now, while the sun is finally out, discover what works for you and get that motivation to stick to your health goal.
Keep going, never give up and never look back.
