Javine’s Diet Diary
Breakfast:
Either porridge with banana or scrambled eggs.
Lunch:
Chicken salad or sometimes vegetable soup.
Dinner:
I’ll have salmon and salad or roast chicken with broccoli, carrots and coleslaw.Snacks: Brazil nuts, almond nuts, natural yoghurt and blueberries and Ryvita with cottage cheese.
Drinks:
I have the vitamin C drink Berocca every morning and lots of water.
Cupboard staples:
I always make sure I have cans of tuna, pasta (as my little daughter loves it) and water. I also stock upon nectarines daily, and lastly coffee, as I’m always in need of at least two in the morning! I try very hard to eat healthy as it makes me feel good. When I don’t I feel tired and sluggish.
Vices:
I love crisps and once I start I can’t stop unfortunately! I love cheese as well, I treat myself twice a week. Every weekend I like to relax with a couple of glasses of white wine.
What the Fairies Say:
A generous shake of cinnamon on top of Javine’s porridge would help to balance her blood sugar levels to keep her energy levels charged. Oh, and porridge isn’t oat-exclusive!Why not try buckwheat flakes or brown rice flakes to broaden your nutrient spectrum?
Chicken salad is a great choice. We hope she dresses her salad Food Fairy-style, and opts for heart-and skin-friendly fats such as olive or pumpkin oil.
We’d recommend Javine adds lentils or pulses to her veggie soup for protein balance, and remember that heat sucks out vegetable goodness, so why not liquidise raw veggies in a blender and combine with heated stock?
Coleslaw makes a fine side dish to any meal. Just avoid pre-prepared versions that are drenched in mayo, and any that arrive in a bucket (best to avoid any food tha arrives in a bucket really…) Make your coleslaw with yoghurt, shredded carrot, cabbage, chopped apple and walnuts!
Almonds are dripping with vitamin E, provide a phenomenal fix of fibre and also add a dash of cholesterol-lowering power. These nuts certainly earn their super-snack stripes.
We’d like to see a splash of colour added to her snacks. Apricot would complement the almond flavours, while cooked beetroot will supply an energising dose of iron to liven up her rye cracker topping!
Who isn’t partial to a packet of satisfyingly salty crisps? We love vegetable Kettle chips. But remember they are still deep-fried!
Did you know?
A couple of glasses of wine a week may be helpful for heart and brain function. Much more is detrimental, but large scale studies suggest that a little alcohol is better for your health than none at all! So we’ll raise our glass to your two-wines-a-week treats Javine!
