With a vast array of products to try and jargon that can be tricky to understand, the CBD market can be a confusing one to navigate.
Here are a few things you’ll want to think about before you buy…
Value for money: a product that allows for maximum absorption of CBD and other cannabinoids into the bloodstream will give you the best value for your money.
Product strength: the strength of product best suited to your needs will depend upon your motivations for using CBD. To help you decide SeedmanCBD have categorised products into three strengths : mild, medium and high. In addition to the rating scale, the mode of ingestion will also influence the strength of the product.
Convenience and comfort: if a product is easy and pleasant to consume you are more likely to want to use it.
CBD isolate or full-spectrum hemp extract: Do you want pure CBD or a full-spectrum hemp extract that includes other cannabinoids as well as CBD?
CBD can be consumed in various forms: oils, capsules, edibles, beverages, e-liquids and lotions, all via different routes of administration. Each mode of ingestion offers a different rate of absorption of CBD, also known as bioavailability . This is an important consideration when determining which product to choose and what amount to take.
So how do I take it?
Each form of CBD has different methods to which you can administer it, here’s a breakdown of the most common
Sublingual ingestion
This requires holding the CBD oil, lozenge or spray under your tongue for between 60 and 90 seconds to enable the absorption of the active ingredients by the mucous membranes in the mouth. Sublingual absorption bypasses the digestive system enabling the active compounds to quickly enter the bloodstream. This is the second quickest and most readily-absorbed route of administration after vaporising or smoking.
Topical application
This involves a CBD oil-infused product like a lotion, cream or balm that’s applied directly onto the skin. Cannabinoid receptors have been found in the skin and there is ongoing research into the function of the skin’s endocannabinoid system. CBD-rich skin products enable CBD to be absorbed directly into this system and exert effects directly where they are most needed.
Oral ingestion
Capsules, edibles, oils and beverages can be orally ingested. Consuming CBD in this way means that it passes through the digestive and metabolic systems before reaching the bloodstream. These systems will break down and filter out a large percentage of the CBD, reducing its bioavailability. Onset of effects is slower (30-60 minutes) and the absorption rate of CBD is lower, so higher doses may be required. However, the duration of effects may be longer.
