The secret to being a successful parent is the little white lies we tell our kids, a recent survey declared. Pressured parents everywhere admit to concocting a few fibs in order to sort out behavioural issues and to try to encourage good habits. The concern of course is that they may copy you, so be careful that they don’t start lying as well!

Around a third of the 2,000 parents surveyed admitted to telling porky pies around food; guilty as charged! But surely sneaking veggies into other foods is okay – how else would our kids have a balanced diet? We all know a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down and similarly just about anything that’s naturally sweet can cover a multitude of ‘good-for-you-but-taste-terrible’ foods.

My kids won’t go near beetroot, yet we know it’s a blood builder and great for fighting infections. I juice it and then blend with some big chunks of pineapple, (a great source of bromelain, which aids digestion and potassium, great for nerve function). It’s a fabulous creamy pink colour and the taste of beetroot magically disappears. I confess, it requires a fib as I call it pineapple berry surprise, the surprise of course being that there are no berries.

This principle works with any fruit and veg, a big chunk of broccoli stalk (high in calcium) can be disguised if covered with apple or pineapple. If you have kids with a sweet tooth (who doesn’t?) avoid conventional sugar and artificial sweeteners and opt instead for the brilliant Tiana Raw Crystallised Organic Coconut Nectar – it looks and tastes exactly like brown sugar… oops, feel another little white lie coming on!
