What got you interested in homeopathy?
Crippling postnatal depression! I’ve used homeopathy on and off all my life, but it wasn’t until the difficult birth of my first child that I discovered my passion for this system of natural medicine. In the months following the birth I was really suffering and my son displayed worrying developmental problems. With the help of homeopathy I rapidly recovered my ability to enjoy motherhood and my son’s progress came on in leaps and bounds. My GP offered me anti-depressants, and I’m delighted to say I didn’t need them.
This experience fuelled my interest in homeopathy. Before having children I’d worked in publishing and event management but didn’t feel properly fulfilled. When my children started in education I decided that I wanted to go back to school myself. To begin with, I enrolled on the correspondence course at the School of Homeopathy which enabled me to learn at my own pace, fitting study around family life. Eventually I joined the School’s attendance course in Stroud, Gloucestershire where I spent four stimulating and vibrant years in the beautiful surroundings of the School and Cotswolds. I left just six months ago and I’m well on my way to establishing my own thriving practice (estherwise1@gmail.com).
What was the training like?
Inspiring! Life-changing! The programme at the School of Homeopathy gave me a solid grounding in the principles of homeopathy, particularly the natural law of like cures like, whereby substances that cause particular symptoms can, in small doses, treat those same symptoms in the sick.
What’s your practice like?
I create a caring environment where patients are given plenty of time (90 mins for first consultations). I see most of my patients from my home clinic in Leamington Spa which is quiet, private and comfortable and I work once a week from a chiropractic clinic. I enjoy working with other alternative health professionals. I like working hard, I see most of my patients in the morning and spend the afternoon making sure I understand my cases and thoroughly researching the best remedy for each patient.
What complaints do you treat?
Homeopathy treats the person as a whole rather than specific named complaints. Our remedies stimulate the body’s own natural healing mechanism. My patients have reported improvements in conditions ranging from ear infections, ADHD and menstrual complaints, to depression, anxiety and night terrors.
What challenges do you face as a homeopath?
The biggest challenge is the negative press. All I can say as a patient myself, is that the results speak for themselves. And it’s not just me; 1 in 8 people in the UK and well over 200 million people around the world use homeopathy. However, science is yet to understand how homeopathy works, but we know it does from the results. Science also does not know how anaesthetics work. My personal experience, and a growing body of scientific research does support homeopathy’s effectiveness. To people who are unsure or even negative about homeopathy, I simply say, ‘just try it.’ I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t.
