How to make the most of what lies beneath your sheets
Typical facts like spending a third of our lives in bed asleep, or that we should change our
mattress up to every eight years, are sleep facts that are often drilled into us. But there is a
reason for this. Without placing emphasis on it, we’d probably forget about the true
importance of sleep and how it can really affect our day-to-day lives. So – what’s the deal with changing our mattresses every 6-8 years? And how does it affect our sleep?
The short of it is, mattresses aren’t designed to last forever. As much as we sometimes hate to fork out the price of a new mattress, can you really put a price on years of great sleep? Say you invested £500 on a mattress that lasted eight years, you’d only be spending a fiver a month for that sumptuous, comfortable sleep. And the benefits you get from this will outweigh that one-off cost.
After years of usage, mattress springs naturally diminish. This is especially true if you do not rotate your mattress every few months, as the same springs will be pressured for years. Really, this means they become less rigid and cannot support your body to the fullest extent, and over time this can mean that you don’t realise that you aren’t receiving the maximum rejuvenating rest. You can wake up with aches and pains if the mattress has really deteriorated. No one wants that, right?
So, simply the best way to curb this is to ensure that you look after your sleeping solution. As we’ve mentioned, rotating your mattress every few months is a great way of doing this. If you’ve got a double-sided mattress too, flipping it over just as regularly is one of the best ways to maintain your bed, and therefore giving you the best sleep for as long as possible.
But it raises the question as to when you need to change your mattress. Companies, sleep organisations and institutions state variations from six-10 years, depending on the quality of your mattress, alongside the type of spring unit and material used. It can also be dependent on the firmness of the mattress, as generally light statures and side sleepers work better with softer mattresses, and firmer mattresses are best designed for heavier statures as well as back/front sleepers. Firmer mattresses tend to last longer because of the tension in the springs. But the general average is eight years of sumptuous sleep until you may need to upgrade.
There you have it, and if you hadn’t thought much about your quality of sleep before, and
think you could benefit from a few quick changes, switch up your sleeping habits so you can be on your way to better rest.
