Human behaviour specialist Dominic Knight explains how to make this diet into a permanently healthy change
It’s amazing, people try everything under the sun to lose the inches and look great: sticking gastric bands in their stomachs… sugar loaded diet drinks… potions and pills… even lasers to incinerate the fat. I know this area all too well because I use to be 30lbs overweight and get caught up in the magic pill phenomena and would look for every short cut until I discovered the real secret to weight loss, a real solution that works and can work so well that you may even be able to keep the weight off for life! The reality is all you have to do is eat good clean unprocessed foods, cut out your sugars, white flours and saturated fats, do some enjoyable things that make your heart race and the pounds will melt off like a hot knife through butter. Once in a while, fast food and desserts are ok (when monitored correctly).
Here is where the problem resides, after you’ve been eating clean for a few days you suddenly get a rush of cravings come over you, you then eat a little of something and you throw the whole diet out of the window, saying ‘I will start tomorrow’ … and tomorrow slips further and further away, until you’ve packed on more pounds then you started with! Now even though to lose weight sounds simple enough, what stops people is the mental application. If you were able to program your mind in such away that your desires became to eat the foods that keep you slim and trim and to exercise regularly, will power free, until it became a hard wired habit, you would then look great and keep the weight off. Almost everyone knows this, however you probably neglect the only thing that will enable you to follow through, which is your mind. Ironically, changing your mind should be the FIRST thing you do. After all, external fixes only remedy the symptoms, never addressing the root cause. That’s why focusing on your mind, your habits and your beliefs about a healthy lifestyle are so powerful at creating effective, powerful and long-lasting change. Try the easy-to-follow steps below:
1) When you wake up, plan each meal in your mind. Visualise: see yourself throughout the day eating the right healthy foods.
2) 95% of all human behaviour is subconscious. In an Imperial College study, researchers found that eating quickly stops the release of a hormone that tells the brain that the stomach is full. The lesson in this is eat slowly and mindfully with greater awareness every day until it becomes a habit.
3) Before bedtime, visualise a crystal clear image of yourself at your ideal weight and play out the scenarios in your head of how you achieved it. The subconscious part of your mind does not distinguish between what is real and what is imagined. If you keep imaging it with emotion you will surely end up acting on it and translating that image into reality!
4) Eat regular, small nutrient-dense meals to curb cravings and alleviate binges completely. Do some activity that you enjoy that makes your heart race too; it could be dancing, badminton or even going to the gym.
Good luck
