Did you know that a pot plant in your home could increase your wellbeing?
A cactus or two in the bedroom, a spider plant on your desk and maybe a few fresh herbs in the kitchen – we’ve all been known to add some greenery to our homes. But have you ever stepped back from your plants’ beauty and design appeal and considered that they may be able to boost your health? The lovely folk at Wyevale Garden Centre have shared their top four health benefits of having plants around the home.
You’ll be less stressed and anxious
According to the Royal Horticultural Society , there are several psychological benefits to having plants in your home, from improving your mood, to lowering your stress levels and helping you to feel less anxious. Studies have found that placing just three plants in a room can vastly affect how the people in it feel. So re-home the family photo and invest in a cluster of house plants to promote a calmer environment.
They’ll help you to breathe easier
A study recently published by the Royal College of Physicians suggested that indoor air pollution may contribute to or cause 99,000 deaths in Europe every year. Scary right? Everyday products such as cleaning sprays, air fresheners and deodorants all add to the poor air quality inside our homes and house plants can go a long way to combat this. “It’s been proven that houseplants can have fantastic health benefits. Scientists have found that placing them in hospital rooms can accelerate the recovery of surgical patients, and having them in classrooms can even improve the concentration levels of children,” explains Nicky Roeber, online horticultural expert at Wyevale Garden Centres. “Plants can remove toxins, such as trichloroethylene and formaldehyde, from the air in any space they’re placed in, which helps to purify it and make it a lot healthier for us to breathe!”
They humidify the air
Forget fancy humidifiers, all you need is a selection of gorgeous greenery. Adding moisture to the air in your home can have a whole host of benefits including reducing your risk of catching common illnesses and helping you to recover if you do fall ill. To humidify your home with plants, try grouping several together as this will prevent them from drying out. Also, be sure to mist their leaves to increase their humidifying potential.
You’ll sleep better
As houseplants can help us to de-stress, having a couple in your bedroom is likely to improve the quality of your sleep . Jasmine, lavender, aloe vera and valerian plants are common choices for the bedroom and they can act as fantastic natural sleep aids… plus they smell fantastic.
